As a Sondheim superfan, my favorite overtures are ''Gypsy,'' ''Merrily We Roll Along'' and ''Pacific Overtures'' (as a whole show).
The most stunning staging I've ever seen of an overture was Hynter-MacMillan's opening sequence to the Tony-winning 1994 revival of ''Carousel.''
It sets up life in a New England milltown and at a carnival, and when the painted horses turn into a giant merry-go-round, it's a coup de theatre. |
