Something I should add: It is possible that there was an overture at the beginning of the run, and it was dropped as the run continued, but then put back. Another reason why I believe an overture was there on opening night in 1957, although this one is considerably less than definitive: When Bernstein conducted the overture on opening night of the return engagement in 1960, a number of critics mentioned this in their reviews, and there was a good deal of pre-publicity about this. Nowhere have I found any mention that the overture had been added to the show, including in the reviews. You might think a critic writing specifically about Bernstein conducting the overture might say something like, "I don't remember the show having an overture when it first opened," but if anyone did, I haven't found it. |
