Good insight. I saw the first preview with my daughter and her bf. My daughter loved it, bf hated it, I was mixed to neg (I’m he/him). Those reactions got me to thinking about how gender might play a role in reactions to this production. I was much more bothered by how weak her husband’s role was written or played or both than Tamara’s hair, the car or the bedroom sliding on/off. The timeline confused and bothered me. That daughter went from bassinet to like 10 yo in a year or two if I followed the projections and the final scenes skip 30 years as if in a time warp. I know she sort of dropped out of sight from ‘45 til ‘75 but she did something!! We missed it. Beth was underused but she is a comedienne shoehorned into two dramatic roles. Actually I thought it was one continuous role until my daughter explained that in fact her mother did not become a countess. 🤣 Go. Enjoy. You might surprise yourself. Especially if you identify as female. |
