Love him or hate him, he takes big swings and he dares theater to expand in its expression.
If he had only made Hedda Gabler, he would be an important director. Add to that his productions of The Misanthrope, the original Dutch Opening Night, and West Side Story (just amongst the ones I’ve seen), and we have one of the greats, who had inspired an entire wave of theater in his footsteps.
Does that mean everything he does is good? Of course not. Has he started relying on his bag of tricks to create commercial product, yes, but you can’t blame a guy for doing his hustle, we all got to build a nest egg while we can. |
