For what it's worth, Herman practically disowns The Grand Tour in his memoirs. He claims Michael Stewart talked him into it, but the material didn't sing to him. It's probably true that his upbeat, bombastic style probably wasn't ideal for a musical about escaping the Nazis, but there are some lovely things in it. There was a cut-down version in 1989, done by the long-gone Jewish Rep, with a cast of people you've probably never heard of. Herman did publicity for it but it doesn't seem to have a favorite of his. |
