In Colored Lights, the book of interviews with Kander and Ebb, they say that no one after Gilford was able to make it work, but I find that hard to fully buy. I love Peter Sallis on the original London cast recording, although perhaps he was less effective in the theatre than on the cast recording. But I would think that beloved Yiddish theatre comic actor Leo Fuchs was able to make it work on the first national tour. And I found several reviews that specifically mentioned his "Meeskite" as a highlight of the production. |
