"And yes, Sondheim's original June/April joke works so well. Randy/Andy is very weak in comparison - it's serviceable, but it's not nearly as funny, and doesn't match with the size of the moment that Sondheim builds to in the music. Oscar/Tony would have been very clever but maybe a little too forced? I dunno." If they're going with renaming the character to Andy, I always thought that Bobbie's wrong guess should have been Amos. I think that would especially land with an African-American actress playing Bobbie, as is the case on the tour. Sure, it's a pretty specific and dated cultural reference, but one that, I think, still resonates a bit and, even if a lot of people have never heard of AMOS AND ANDY, it's a joke that, at least, means something, unlike Randy/Andy, which is just a rhyme and could be a honest misheard mistake, rather than a complete forgetting of the name with Bobbie racking her brain for a few seconds to try her best. So you'd still be getting the same effect as Randy/Andy, but the reference would hit deeper for those who know the context. |
