I'm as restless as a willow in a windstorm, I'm as jumpy as a puppet on a string! ... I almost mentioned this in my OP. It's easily one of my all-time favorite Hammerstein lyrics. Hammerstein wasn't at all afraid of a good metaphor or simile -- "A Wonderful Guy," and "Oh, What A Beautiful Mornin'," arguably his most famous -- but what always impresses me about Hammerstein's metaphors are how truly original they are, yet how they sound like something folks must have been saying for all time. A willow in a windstorm? Effortless. Instantly conjures up just the mental image that we need for this lyric to land. Corny as Kansas in August? I mean, come ON. Seems like it's just been lying there forever waiting for someone to say it. No one had. - GMB |
