Mendez JUST won a Tony in 2018. Just because she's giving a Tony worthy performance doesn't mean she needs to win, or will, for this. Plunkett won in 1987. So both have Tonys already. While I think there's a LOT of love for all 3 main actors in Merrily, and they all stand a very good chance of winning, especially in a season that is both crowded and disappointing for musicals, there is also some very stiff competition. I don't think Groff will win over Brian D'Arcy James, and after Brian I'm not sure who has the stronger shot, Groff or Redmayne, and I wouldn't discount Ricky Ubeda from Illinois. Plunkett is being considered for Lead isn't she? And Mendez for Featured... I think she's likely to win but has a lot of competition from Kecia Lewis, Joy Woods, Bebe Neuwirth, Leslie Kritzer, Amber Iman, Shoshana Bean, not to mention the ladies from Suggs, and maybe Here Lies Love. I wouldn't be surprised if Radcliffe wins but I also wouldn't be surprised of Conrad Ricamora comes in with the upset, or Steven Skybell in Cabaret, or one of the Outsiders boys, or even mayyyybe Chip Zien, a favorite for decades without ever being nominated even. Who knows! |
