Re that Sam Gold production with Reed Birney, Merritt Wever, & Michael Shannon, the theatre held only very few seats, & I felt overwhelmingly blessed to have been able to get in to see it via a line for steeply discounted (were they only $.99??) matinee tickets...it truly was a special production of one of my favorite plays. Every time Shannon's Astrov touched Merritt Wever's love-starved Sonya deepened her love for him, so the way she gathered strength for herself & Vanya to carry on alone at the end was all the more heartbreaking. So much responsibilty lies in the thought - & willing to take risks - regarding casting, & does that happen as much any more? |
