The survey about attendance at arts events that is linked to the article is very interesting, although it's a bit skewed because the most recent survey asked about activities in the 12 months from July 2021 to July 2022, which is a time period where COVID concerns had a significant impact on attendance. This survey is conducted by the US Census Bureau, so hopefully the methodology is sound. In 2017, 16.5% of respondents said they had seen a live musical in the prior 12 months, and 9.4% said they saw a "non-musical stage play." Both of those numbers seem higher than I would have thought. 18.2% said they watched or listened to a theater production online or through digital media (which I assume includes DVDs and such); this also seems high. In comparison to those 2017 numbers, the numbers for Jul 2021 - Jul 2022 dropped by 38% for musicals, 52% for plays, and by 32% for online/digital consumption. I'm curious what those numbers would be today. |
