Assassins had a limited, sold-out run at Playwrights Horizons, and was indeed preparing to move to Broadway - and then the Gulf War happened and it just felt like the wrong move at the time. Then, a production was finally planned in 2001, and then the World Trade Center attacks happened. As we know, the show finally got its Broadway production in 2004.
Meanwhile, I was music director for a production at Brandeis in 1993 (though Boston Conservatory had first dibs the season before) and at the Lyric Stage Company of Boston in 1998 (which was the professional regional premiere). |
