I can pick all kinds of holes in Blood Brothers, and I generally have a very low tolerance indeed for adult actors playing children (there are occasional exceptions, most recently the RSC's astonishing adaptation of My Neighbour Totoro) - but I grew up in a place that isn't all that far or all that different from the place where Blood Brothers is set (Blood Brothers is Merseyside, I'm from Greater Manchester), and there's a lot in it that moves me.
And while not everything in the score is a gem, I think 'Easy Terms' is one of the best British musical theatre songs of the 1980s. And Barbara Dickson gave an absolutely superb performance. |
