Sorry to be dramatic, but this play has an absurdly short schedule if a TWO WEEK extension only gets it to JUNE 16! It just opened 2 days ago. June 16 is 7.5 weeks. They were doing a major new play, with the broadway debut of a huge star, and it was only schedule to run 5.5 weeks after opening night? I guess this is normal for non-profits and I'm being silly in taking this like it's new... but it's hitting me just how ridiculously short that is for a Broadway schedule. At a certainly point it almost makes me wonder why it qualifies as Broadway or for Tony consideration. I know the answer is that it's produced in a certain region of the city, in a theater with a certain minimum of seats, and they hire on a certain contract (though for non-profits, that is quite a difference from commercial productions)... but sheesh. How do the voters even all get to see it in time? How do they have enough seats to give away post-opening in a run that short? And it's not as if being at a non-profit keeps tickets cheaper. Tickets go up to $318 for this 90 minute play, and start at $118 (almost all of them are near or above 200 it seems). Sigh. |
