The Hills of California, Nachtland, and The Human Body all got very mixed reviews (I liked Nachtland and can see why a lot of people didn't).
Dear Octopus, I thought, was exquisite - a perfectly-pitched production of a nearly-forgotten play, beautifully directed and with a very strong cast. And life would be very dull indeed if we all liked the same things. It got mostly excellent reviews, but it didn't sell particularly well, and clearly there are people for whom it didn't resonate. And that's the way it goes - the year before, Jack Absolute Flies Again got spectacular reviews, and I wholeheartedly loathed the first act and left at the intermission, which is something I almost never do. |
