100% the director, in my opinion.
I thought Ashford was a mess all around. She truly underwhelmed me. That being said - she always underwhelms me.
I am no Sutton acolyte (Marian Paroo anyone?) but Sutton's performance - while directed in the same manic fashion - held up when she was allowed to bring some nuance and absolutely when she was singing. I thought she flawlessly navigated the character moments in her vocals when needed straight into when we needed to hear these beautiful songs sung by a consummate technician.
For me - the take on Lovett was the only miss in this otherwise stellar production. |
