I can’t argue with the “bigness” of Gatsby’s themes and its influence but Fitzgerald’s world building is defined by economy. He resisted the Hugo sized narrative conventions that demanded abridgment in a musical. At 47,094 words, Gatsby is barely a novel. I’d appreciate a musical that captured Fitzgerald’s precision and - dangerous word - efficiency. And a trust in audiences to grasp his characters without overstating motives and origin story regret. But trusting audiences is perhaps a bigger topic for another thread. |
