I can't adequately answer this as I've only seen the film, but Peter Barnes wrote his own screenplay and much of it is recognizable as dialogue written for the stage. That the movie doesn't feel stagy is a tribute to its director and cast, not to mention its own outrageousness, plus some well-chosen exteriors and minimal special effects.
