You and I agree on that Stuhlbarg "Hamlet." I thought it was magnificent--at least, what I saw of it. So clear, so urgent, so dangerous. The performance I attended was called for bad weather about halfway through.

The rain started very lightly. At first, you could barely notice it. I remember only seeing it clearly in the stage lights looking up at Margaret Colin high on the castle battlements. But I will never, ever forget the spectacle of Michael Stuhlbarg as Hamlet deciding to avenge his father's murder as the winds picked up, and--it seems so improbable, but I swear it's true--the leaves off the surrounding trees were swirling, eddying around him in a whirlwind at his feet. It was as if nature decided to create a perfectly timed stage effect. I imagine Stuhlbarg himself remembers this moment. It may have helped feed his monologue. Thrilling. I couldn't believe the production received a shrug from the critics...
