Patriots is being given a wonderful production, but its “see the hunter get captured by the game” look at living Russian history feels empty on a few fronts. For one, we are kept at a distance because it has been written from one. We have little visceral sense of what it might be like to be a Russian in the years the play covers. For another, we are watching a power reversal between two equally dangerous forces. To be fair, they do not bore, but you’d be hard pressed to feel better if their fortunes had not reversed, or were to reverse again. Perhaps most damagingly, it warns us about the danger of Russia in the hands of capitalist oligarchs without taking into consideration that the failure of Marxism brought Russia to this place to begin with.

There is so much more to explore here, and the simplistic telling barely scratches the surface. Perhaps it could be more fully explored as a miniseries.

I expected it to be nominated for the Best Play Tony, but I would not call its not having been so an oversight. I would like to have seen Will Keen nominated, however. He and Michael Stuhlbarg are both Tony worthy.
