If Here Lies Love had opened in the spring, its nomination haul would have been much higher, but the producers knew that was how the game works. This season reminds me a little bit of the season that Gentlemen's Guide or Memphis won, when the spring musicals kind of fizzled out. But this season, the pre-spring musicals that could have won if they had stuck it out, namely Here Lies Love and Days of Wine and Roses, didn't make it to nomination day.

If Here Lies Love fast-tracked to Broadway, it could have opened in the same season as Gentlemen's Guide, and I think it could well have won that year. But I guess we'll never know.

I really enjoyed Here Lies Love both at the Public and on Broadway, but I think it worked better at the Public with the smaller audience. On Broadway, it felt more like we were being herded around in a big group in a circle. It was kind of reminiscent of the better experience at the Public, rather than being as rewarding in itself. And not having the ability to have the audience sit at the end of the show undermined the show as I've mentioned before.

I also think that Arielle Jacobs was hurt by the inevitable comparisons to Ruthie Ann Miles. Jacobs was excellent, but Miles was really exceptional. Conrad Ricamora was outstanding, and I think he would have been nominated if Here Lies Love opened in the spring. Jose Llana was also excellent, but Marcos isn't as complex a character as Aquino, an example of a place where I think the book could have been better.
