I can't see it succeeding on Broadway either.

I saw it at sohoplace. A lot about it was likeable, it had a superb cast, I was very pleased to see Amy Trigg win an Olivier for her sharp, funny performance as the physio - but there was also a lot wrong with it. The family were written as Generic Mum, Generic Dad, and Generic Brothers (Linzi Hateley managed to supply some of the emotional depth the writing lacked, but not everybody else did), and too often it seemed as if the writing team were terrified of engaging with complex emotional territory. Henry's gradual recovery and his development as an artist seemed to come far too easily; I can understand *not* wanting to write a show about disability that is simply a litany of suffering, but what we got, Trigg and (sometimes) Hateley aside, was an evening of blandly synthetic sentimental uplift, and Henry Fraser's story deserves more than that. Some of the music is attractive, I liked the direction and the designs, and it certainly wasn't a painful evening in the theatre - but it could have been a knockout, and it just wasn't.

I doubt there's any commercial interest in moving it to Broadway anyway. It did not sell well in London. For most of the run until the last few weeks, tickets were not at all difficult to come by, and I mean at a very hefty percentage off the full price. And it's a pity, because I think they were trying to do something very worthwhile.
