I don't think Durang was trying to outdo or mock Chekhov. He took those Chekhovian-type characters and gave them his own unique spin.
As Durang said: ''My play is not a Chekhov parody. ... I take Chekhov scenes and characters and put them into a blender.''
I loved ''Vanya and Sonia'' and its blend of happiness and sadness as seen through Durang's prism of the absurdities of life.
I saw it a number of times at the Beaumont and at the Golden, and I'm thrilled the show and its terrific cast live on on YouTube. |
