I have actually still never seen the movie, so I can't agree or not.

But the quality movie a song is in is very often not part of the equation. It certainly isn't "best song in a great movie", and many songs in bad or mediocre or forgettable-at-best movies have been nominated (and some bad songs in mediocre movies have been, last year was great example of that with the embarrassing nomination of Dianne Warren's bad song in that dumb hot cheetos movie).

So I'm not sure that the movie being badly received is why such a standout song from respected songwriters, who'd already written great songs for an Oscar favorite movie (Cabaret) was shut out. But it certainly didn't help... and maybe it is the entire reason.
