Shall I tell you what I think of the 1999 animated version of ''The King and I''? It's crap. What a wrongheaded and wretched adaptation. This ''kid-friendly'' version includes cutesy animals, like a monkey, elephant and panther. Anna is threatened by a sea monster. The King is menaced by giant stone statues that magically come to life. Worse, the evil prime minister has a fat and dumpy comic sidekick who keeps losing his teeth. (There's also a glaring lack of Southeast Asian talent among the principals, but that same complaint could apply to the 1956 Oscar-winning movie.) This ''King and I'' was so bad that the Rodgers & Hammerstein estates forbid any future animated versions of its musicals. And Ted Chapin, the president of the Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization, called it his ''biggest mistake in terms of granting or denying permission.'' |
