Your exchange above brings into great clarity one of the many reasons I think the Les Miz film is so unsatisfying. On stage (a show I like very much) so many of the songs are one person on stage in an almost black box sort of situation singing about their feelings. Soliloquoy, I Dreamed a Dream, Castle on a Cloud, Stars, On My Own, Bring Him Home, Javert's Suicide, Empty Chairs at Empty Tables. I think on stage there is a contract with the audience that this sort of thing is expected and welcome. But on film it can be very inert and boring. In this film at least, they certainly did not figure out an interesting way to film these songs. The camera adds nothing, expect perhaps some quality shots of the actor's inner nostrils :-) |
