I agree. I am a huge fan of hers. I really questioned her doing LADY DAY until I was swept away by the performance. She just doesn't have that "earthiness" that I see in the role. I didn't realize that Patti's production was 16 years ago but honestly, do we need another GYPSY? It's a great show but it just feels like too soon. Candidly, I always thought the reason to revive it would've been because some out of left field choice was going to do it. I felt that way when Tyne Daly suprised us all. She may be too old now, but a totally invested and well-directed Cyndi Lauper would sell tickets. Make it an event. I do understand Audra's draw but, you're right, after the local Audra worshippers buy tickets, what will put people in seats? Let someone write an original for this amazing performer. But, after 6 tonys, I guess she wants to do this like people want to conquer Lear and Hamlet. Also, didn't LaChuisa write Marie Christine for her? Anyway, didn't mean to go on and on. I just wish someone else would be cast :-)
