| I was using "blackface" in a more general way - that is, the portrayal of a black person by a white person, even without the makeup. I should have qualified that. But it all comes from the same place - that the shame of minstrel performance still affects the way we (well, most of us) see things. Which is why many people (clearly not you) are comfortable with a black woman playing Rose, whereas many people would be incredibly uncomfortable seeing a white-cast version of an August Wilson play. |
