It seems Venza began his career as a costume and set designer. Another support for the idea that the model for the widely broadcast PBS productions of the performing arts wasn't "live capture" but film adaptations often shot on studio sets that were meant to be as visually accessible to a contemporary television audience as possible.

Venza also seems to have been part of a pool of artists who were sponsored by the State Department as ambassadors of American culture during the Cold War.
