Please keep us posted on your book! It sounds like it will be right up my alley! That's interesting to hear that there WERE objections in some quarters. I can't imagine everybody in 1967 would have been universally accepting. There wasn't exactly a flood of all-Black casts that followed it, was there? Apart from the GUYS AND DOLLS, there were the adaptations of THE MIKADO (THE HOT MIKADO) and THE WIZ, although the latter was a completely new show. My memory of a fringe production I saw of THE HOT MIKADO ten or fifteen years ago was that the show is strikingly close to the original G&S. The last such "revisal" I can remember was David Merrick's penultimate show, the all-Black revival of OH, KAY! with Brian (pre-Stokes) Mitchell and Tamara Tunie (-Bouquett). I never realized the AEA had a Black president as far back as the 1960's. Thanks for elucidating me :). |
