(NEW YORK, NY: May 30, 2024) Songbook Sundays, created and hosted by Deborah Grace Winer celebrating the American Songbook will continue at Jazz at Lincoln Center's Dizzy's Club with One for Johnny Mercer on Sunday, June 9th at 5 PM and 7:30 PM.

One for Johnny Mercer swings into summer as Jazz at Lincoln Center American Songbook celebrates the iconic songs of Johnny Mercer. This Songbook Sundays serves up standards from Moon River to Blues in the Night, One for My Baby, Come Rain or Come Shine to Skylark and more.

Hosted and curated by leading American Songbook expert Deborah Grace Winer, the set features the stage and concert powerhouse Klea Blackhurst, acclaimed jazz singer Gabrielle Stravelli, with JALC rising star Robbie Lee and acclaimed singer-pianist Billy Stritch, as the evening's Music Director.

The intergenerational band of all-stars features Eric Halvorson on drums (Russell Malone, Beegie Adair, Kenny Washington), Caylen Bryant on bass (Blue Note Records artist Kandace Springs), and Daniel Cohen on saxophone (Juilliard).

With some breezy stories, it's a warm and cool June jam party.

Ms. Winer said: "With Dizzy's Songbook Sundays, we wanted to make a community where it's always fun, always festive, and the audience and the performers have a blast being in each other's company. We're grateful this bi-monthly party has become just that haven."

One of New York's most popular music destinations, Songbook Sundays is in its third year, after premiering spring 2022 with Got Gershwin followed by salutes to Cole Porter, Duke Ellington, Irving Berlin, Rodgers and Hart, Lerner and Loewe, Fats Waller, Jerome Kern, Harold Arlen, Cy Coleman, Frank Loesser and Rodgers & Hammerstein. It will continue with a celebration of Duke Ellington (August 18th). All shows are at 5pm and 7:30pm, and feature top vocal talent from Broadway, cabaret and jazz, with a diverse mix of young artists and veteran stars. Energy, fun, great music—welcoming new Songbook Sundays audiences from all over the world as well as a fresh new offering for JALC's home audience.

In the spirit of swing, the mission of Jazz at Lincoln Center is to entertain, enrich and expand the global community for jazz through performance, education and advocacy. Dizzy's Club offers live jazz performances with panoramic views of the Manhattan skyline and Central Park.

To reach Jazz at Lincoln Center's Dizzy's Club, enter at Columbus Circle at 60th Street and Broadway, take the Jazz elevators to the 5th floor for Dizzy's Club as well as The Rose Theater and The Appel Room.

BIOS:

Deborah Grace Winer (Curator, Host) is a leading expert on the classic American Songbook, and writer and creator of theatrical revues and concerts. Along with previous projects with Jazz at Lincoln Center, collaborations include Feinstein's/54 Below, Birdland, and a decade as Artistic Director of the 92Y's Lyrics & Lyricists™ concert series, presiding over 50 original shows and steering the venerable series back to audience and critical acclaim. She collaborates with top-tier artists from Broadway and the music world, and works with leading institutions. Author and dramatist, among her four books is On the Sunny Side of the Street: The Life and Lyrics of Dorothy Fields (Macmillan), recently named by the Wall Street Journal one of the Five Best books on American Songwriters. Her articles have appeared in The New York Times, and her plays, off-Broadway and regionally. She has been featured on PBS American Masters, and NPR's "Fresh Air" and "Morning Edition."

Klea Blackhurst (vocalist) is a singer, actress and comedienne who's performed in venues across the country and abroad, in venues including Carnegie Hall, JALC's Rose Hall, the London Palladium, Town Hall, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the Cafe Carlyle, Joe's Pub, and regular appearances at Birdland. New York theatre credits include: A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, Radio Gals, Oil City Symphony; she's been featured on myriad albums. She's also known for her acclaimed tribute to Ethel Merman, Everything the Traffic Will Allow.

Gabrielle Stravelli (vocalist) is an award winning singer, songwriter and recording artist. She appears in jazz clubs and jazz festivals across the country and internationally, including regular monthlong residencies Birdland; in 2023, at the Jazz on the Mountain Festival in New Paltz, NY, Cape Cod Jazz Festival, Cayman Arts Festival, Delaware Water Gap COTA Jazz Festival, and toured Chile bringing her third collaboration with Fred Hersch, having recorded his song cycle. She's a US Jazz Ambassador and just released her fifth album.

Robbie Lee (vocalist) is a JALC young artist favorite, a winner of its Essentially Ellington Festival and Competition, and a winner of the Next Generation Jazz Festival. Also a pianist and composer, he has performed with Wynton Marsalis, Jimmy Heath and Ray Drummond. Jazz festival appearances include Montreux, Monterey, Umbria and Bern. He is a graduate of Manhattan School of Music with an Artist Diploma Degree from Juilliard.

Billy Stritch (MD, piano, vocals) Pianist-singer Billy Stritch has been a presence on the New York and national nightclub scene for nearly four decades. He began his career in Houston where we formed the vocal trio Montgomery, Plant and Stritch. The threesome performed all over New York and Europe from 1983 until they parted ways in 1990. That same year, Billy started his solo performing career. He is perhaps best known for his 25 year position as musical director and pianist for Liza Minnelli and has also toured with Tony Bennett, Linda Eder, Melissa Manchester, Marilyn Maye, Linda Lavin and many other top singers. His 1993 composition "Does He Love You" won the Grammy award and was recently recorded by Reba McEntire and Dolly Parton garnering another Grammy nomination in 2023. He was named Outstanding Musical Director for the fourth time by Broadway World and his 2022 birthday show at New York's famed Birdland Jazz Club was named Outstanding Vocal Jazz Engagement of the year. Billy has recorded numerous solo albums and his most recent release "Billy's Place" (Club44 Records) is available on all the streaming platforms and at his website billystritch.com.
