What was the first Broadway show to institute a matinee cast?

I've always understood it was "Who's Afraid of Virignia Woolf?," in which the entire four-person play had a separate cast on Wednesdays and Saturdays, but I'd love to know if anyone has information about a star who opted out of eight shows a week (with management's permission) in a play or musical prior to this 1962 production. Thanks.
