Actually, Jolson was known sometimes to literally stop the show, tell the audience directly the rest of the plot and how the story ends, and then give them a concert of his songs right there and then. He didn't necessarily wait for the curtain call. I think I recall reading that Patsy Kelly and others mentioned this happening.
