I thought Herman had said that he wrote MAME with Judy Garland's voice in mind. Later in the Broadway run, there, apparently, was some exploration to see if Garland coming into the show was a thing that could happen. If I remember the story correctly, she was interested in doing it, but the producers couldn't get her insured because she had such a bad rep for showing up late, not at all, or under the influence by that time.

A Garland Mame is probably one of those real missed opportunity performances that would have been legendary in one way or another. Had she been healthy and lived longer, her casting in the film would've been a no brainer. But I wonder if she'd have ever been able to sustain 8 performances a week in the role, even in her prime. Doing that is a whole different skill from being able to perform a role. And she only ever performed live in concert, right? That's a whole other skill, as well, that would have been different from doing a show. Even if they'd hired a matinee alternate, that's still 6 performances a week that she'd have had to do. And, as Neely O'Hara famously found out, Broadway doesn't go for booze and dope.
