I thought The Ferryman was a far superior play, but admittedly, it was about an earlier time and world with which I was less familiar. Hills of California is essentially a domestic family drama that could have just as effectively taken place on Cape Cod or the Jersey shore, at least based on this production (I haven't read the script).
I've not seen anything else by Butterworth.
And maybe I was overly harsh in my initial critique of Hills but I expected more, at least from Sam Mendes. I think the London reviews were fairly mixed but I'm sure they're out there if you care to search. |
