but did they say why? It's not always that the show wasn't allowed/invited

It costs a lot of money to do a number on the Tonys... the Tonys doesn't just give it to you, let alone pay anyone of the people involved in putting it up and on. There are union rules too, about payment. If I'm not mistaken, every performers gets a full week's salary to do the performance. Among many other things, including paying for it like ads space in a newspaper.

Most closed shows just can't afford to perform. But also, in a crowded year, the Tonys may not invited some closed shows if it would shut out space needed for a running and/or popular show that wasn't nominated but that would bring eyes to the broadcast or sell tickets as a result.

I'm not sure how it works... I would hope there'd be a rule that *all* productions nominated for Best Musical and Best Musical Revival get to perform if they want and can pay for it. But maybe there isn't. (Personally I think a nomination should guarantee you a spot unless you refuse it)

But hey, I very much wish they still did performances from Best Play and Best Revival... live, or scenes shot live, or if not that then *at least* a 3 minute trailer of footage that sells the show however the producers think best, or is a video the sum up what it was, for posterity and for the home audience to get a sense of what it was, showcases it, and why it was nominated for whatever it was.

Unlike the Oscars, Golden Globes, and Emmys... very few of the home audiences watching this broadcast will have seen the things competing. The Tonys needs to make it possible for them to get a real sense of them all, and even some reason to root for something.

I also think every Acting nom should get a video to showcase their performance, as should the Playwrights, Score and Book writers, Directors, Choreographers, Designers and orchestrators. If this show doesn't both showcase and explain or let the audience in on what these categories and elements and artists all are/do... then in many ways it's wasted opportunity and a moot point whoever wins.

The Tonys has about 2 hours 14 minutes to use for performances, video spotlights, trailers, clips, opening number and hist/presenter bits, buffer time for winners walking, and acceptance speeches. I think it's possible to get it all in.
