I was there last night as well, and I liked it better than I expected. I was reminded that Platt is, after all, a theater artist, so I suppose it should not have been surprising to me that he would do well in this format. I liked his music too, and I think the songs come across better on stage than on disc. For that matter, I think Platt comes across better in person than in video recordings that have surfaced from these performances. Overall, I found him to be very appealing. And framing the evening (and his album) as a love letter to his partner was endearing.
I did find the show to be overamplified, at least where I sat (mid side orchestra, just under the mezzanine). I kind of wished I had brought earplugs. And while I think the Palace looks beautiful, it is very blue! Too much so for my tastes. And, well, it just does not feel the same entering from a side street. |
