Every year we see articles poring naively over some supposed trend, positive or negative, with barely a wave at how it can take ten years or more for shows to go from vague concept to opening night.

In 2011, Margaret Edson was asked her reaction to learning that there would be a record-setting six plays by women coming in. Her answer: "Ask me next year."

The only time I can say there was a true "trend" was in 2021, when collective attention was given to Black writers. For one season.
