We really never will it seems, which I respect! Maybe i'll try to (cough) re-watch it sometime.

H2S is a show I love very much, and had done before I saw his revival, and had seen the fine movie with the indelible Morse performance, and listened to the OBC countless times. But this, unlike many shows, I'm not blaming on being too biased from falling in love with just one take on it and not being open to others. I genuinely think that Ashford was a bad choice for this show as a director, didn't get it, and completely misdirected Radcliffe in the Finch role. As I try to say every time, I blame Ashford more than Radcliffe. He was clearly directed by someone who either saw the role differently than how I think one can observe the writers of it saw the role, or thought he was tailoring it to what he saw were Radcliffe's strengths and away from his limitations, and it resulted in a performance that I felt was the opposite of what that role needs from a star and what the show needs from its lead role.
And I suspect, and may investigate further, that someone like Darren Criss gave a very different performance in it than Radcliffe, and more in line with what the show is screaming for from its star.

But I'm very glad you loved it! And I'm glad the lack of Tony nom or consistent raves didn't sour Radcliffe on broadway musicals (though of course Charley and Merrily are VERY VERY different demands and types of experience than Finch and How to Succeed, and it's been 11 years, so maybe he was soured on the kind of thing Finch/H2S was. Or the right musical at the right time didn't come along again. I know he has limited confidence in his singing voice being at the level of what most musicals need from its star. And in fairness to that, Charley's role/songs are a much better fit than say, Frank... or a Bobby or a Sweeney/Anthony/Toby, Henrik, George, or many other non-sondheim roles of course. I wouldn't have been surprised to see him take on Cliff in Cabaret or Harold Hill, but god forbid Rob Ashford direct him in that. ;)
