They are all well past the time when their believable at late teens or early 20s. Mendez is 41. Groff 39. Radcliffe is closer, but is 34... still too far off.

I don't think Linklater was just looking for a good cast who can play both ages, the whole (fairly pointless, I'd say) idea of his movie is that he shoot it in the real timeline of the actors age. Assuming he's not going to senior year of high school where the show used to and ought to start, he was still looking for actors to film starting in their early 20s and then get older naturally not with post-production.
I think it's a terrible shame he's not using the original structure. Almost all of the rewriting and reworking done to this show was to accommodate for the idea of young people playing middle aged and middle aged people playing teens/young 20s. A movie alleviates those issues and is the only place we could have a version of Merrily that satisfies everything it has to offer.

But, editorializing aside, I don't think Linklater regrets not casting the revival cast just because it's a hit (that is nonetheless closing) that won 2 of them Tonys. He has a different view/goal for his movie.
