| To my great dismay, I clearly recall when there was general Chicken Little-ing when Miss Saigon charged $100 for orchestra and some front mezzanine seats. A quick Google search for inflation calculation shows that $100 in 1991 is about $230 today, so ticket prices have certainly outpaced average inflation. I'm sure there are a gazillion reasons for that in the theater niche. However, at the same time Cameron Mackintosh was pushing the envelope for the prime seats, he also made the back two rows at each of his hit shows available for $15 per ticket for every performance. (I saw the original MS cast as a college student from one of those $15 seats, roughly overhanging 8th Ave.) My quibble with the supply and demand here is there doesn't seem to be any equivalent attempt to provide some balance in pricing availability for big hits these days. | |
