| My interpretation of Lucy and Jessie is not that these are two sides of Phyllis, but about Sally and Phyllis and Phyllis' perception of which of them has what quality that Ben wants. I thought that also, when I was young and first getting to know the show. But it's not the case. Phyllis has no investment in who Sally is or isn't. But Phyllis does have her two sides - the innocent showgirl she always was, and the side of her that wanted Ben so much that she would educate herself and try to elevate her own status enough that he'd really be interested. "I walked my goddamn feet off in the Metropolitan Museum." Now, she's as empty and as unfulfilled as Ben also reveals himself to be, because she never really got to live like the person she really is deep down, she's spent the last 30 years trying to be the kind of educated, jet-setting, upper-crust rich woman she thought Ben wanted. |
