I do think the book goes into too much detail concerning the particulars of Frank's marriages, divorces, affairs, and fatherly duties when these events should only be marginally informing the real focus of the show -- the relationship between the three leads. For example, it's difficult for us to feel anything much for Beth's first iteration of "Not A Day Goes By" when we've only seen her onstage for a few moments and don't really know her at all. These moments -- and others like them -- become stage waits (no matter how lovely) because our investment is not there and we're waiting to get back to tracking the core trio relationship, which is the thematic point of the show (and of its backward time construction).
