I tend to think your trajectory is too specific and too much for just one song, rather than probably happening over an arc of a few songs/scenes. But, I did think of these: Not Sondheim, but Cole Porter's "I Loved Him But He Didn't Love Me" seems to fit the general definition. "Buddy's Blues" from Follies covers unrequited love from 2 different angles with 2 different women, but it's in the ballpark. The "Farewell Letter" duet from Passion also comes close to the idea. But as i said, I think you're probably trying to cover too much ground in one song. Most well-crafted musical theatre songs will take a moment in time, at a time, not recount an entire relationship arc. That's what a SHOW is for, as opposed to a SONG. |
