| This is for anyone who happens to see my Lempicka question posted back in April. I got to see Lempicka for myself, and can answer my own question now. The reason Lempicka's director/producers did not "fix" the production in light of poor reviews during development is because there was NOTHING TO FIX !! The show is/was a MASTERPIECE ! Critics (almost universally) complained that the relationships between the characters never really developed, and I totally agree. The show felt like a montage of events documenting Lempicka's life. But what an AMAZING montage it was! EVERY musical number was utter excellence. The scores, the vocals, and choreography were stunning. Eden Espinosa is a force of nature. At two hours long, adding more "character development" would have required removing or shortening some of these numbers. That is not an option here. Would you trim the edges from the Mona Lisa to make it fit a better frame? I hope this production was recorded live (like Rent back in 2006). I would pay to see it again (and again) in a movie theater. |
