The original was the best production (not perfect) because the show was conceived and written for young adults. I don't have a problem with adults playing a 20-year span either, I just think it worked better with young folks. "Our Time" cannot possibly be as powerful with "grown-ups." I don't really know how to assess the degree to which the bad word of mouth impacted the reviews, or the box office, but they were brutal(not unlike Spiderman), so by the time the show opened, most people had heard terrible things about it and stayed away. I saw the show over 20 times in previews (I was working at the TKTS booth), and the audience response the last week of previews was exhuberant (unlike the early previews, where one night, people actually booed after "Old Friends.") I've liked (almost) every production I've seen, too (particularly the Fiasco, which was closest to the Kaufman/Hart play). It's a fascinating show with a great score - always has been and always will be. And for my taste, it never fails to move me. But no production has come close to the oringal. If you have a chance, see it at a college. Marymount did an excellent production a few years back, and it was stunning. You'll get a sense of how a cast of young people profoundly impacts the material (even the first scenes). It's not the same show that opened in 1981, but the concept was sound. And brilliant. It just needed more time to find its footing.
