My guess is most of the old Broadway houses were built before films became the most common form of entertainment and that they were generally full.
There was also a conscious decision to provide less-than-stellar seats- they were almost literally "stellar"- at a very low cost. In London most of those Balcony seats are accessed by a separate entrance to keep the hoi polloi from rubbing shoulders with the creme de la creme.
In other cities there would have been fewer theatres so I guess they needed to accommodate more audience? Don't most major cities have no more than three or four major houses? |
