Jukebox musicals that are hits seem to be the exception, and not the rule: ''Mamma Mia!,'' ''Jersey Boys,'' ''Beautiful.'' ''Moulin Rouge!'' had the advantage of being based on an Oscar-winning 2001 movie, but the 2019 stage version did a shrewd thing by incorporating more recent pop hits by Beyonce, Adele, etc. Is ''& Juliet'' a hit because it has more contemporary Max Martin hits? Then again, Britney Spears' ''Once Upon a One More Time'' was a flop. ''The Heart of Rock and Roll'' always was gonna have an uphill battle. Critics look down on jukebox musicals, and it was such a crowded season. Maybe had it come where the pickin's were slim, it might've had a chance. Boy, it's hard to imagine there were once seasons like 1995, when there were only two nominees for Best Musical: ''Sunset Boulevard'' and ''Smokey Joe's Cafe,'' a jukebox musical. Or 1985, when ''Leader of the Pack,'' a revue of Ellie Greenwich tunes, got its only Tony nomination for Best Musical, ostensibly to fill out the category. Now, it seems over 10 new musicals open per season. |
