There was much pressure within the theater community that A Chorus Line could not close before Oh Calcutta completed its run since most did not want that to be noted as the longest running Broadway show. The show was on shaky legs for the second half of 1989 as it approached the record but the Shuberts put no pressure on Papp. A Chorus Line did that at the end of 1989. In February of 1990, Papp admitted that the show was losing money each week and that it would close at the end of March. Attendance picked up a bit and the ending was actually postponed for a month.
