While I am not sure I want to wade into the salary discussion, let me make what I hope are a few new points. First it is was most likely a good decision to get together as a single unit to negotiate. But we must remember, agents can push only so far--there was no guarantee that the show would be a huge hit and at its long running time there were likely sizable overtime payments adding to the weekly cost. If the show didn't transfer it would be back to looking for the next show. Also remember that the actor interviewed only listed a weekly salary and suggested profit participation was also involved (this could be a critical part of the package). As for the costs of being an actor and living in New York--it is always going to be a shockingly low amount left after all the required deductions. It is also important to note that some of the costs mentioned in the article and in the posts on this thread are optional--and in the case of this particular actor--more of an investment in the future, he has correctly seized on the unique opportunity of being Tony nominated in a super hot play to do everything possible to be able make more possibilities. That is were the manager/publicist/stylist come in. I also want to acknowledge that the personal finances of any performer (no matter how fascinating) is really not my business.
